Released from Amish Bondage

Are we concerned for the souls of the men, women, and children trapped in the wretchedness of the false religion of the Amish? Outwardly it appears to be a simple, family oriented, uncompromising lifestyle based upon their understanding of the bible. Inwardly it is a slavish life lacking true joy; of disconnected tradition, superstition, and prejudice - and an ignorance of the Scriptures. We rejoice when we hear of those who discover the Biblical truth of the Gospel and are converted from such legalistic bondage to freedom in Christ.

While we disparage any false religion we love the souls of those who ignorantly worship at the altar of the "plain people" and desire their conversion to Christ. With that in mind, I give you the true story of God's Providence in the salvation of one Amish man and his family.

When first visiting this area our Pastor came in contact with a former Amish family that had been converted to Christ. As a result, and some years later, that family, and another former Amish family, visited our church. During the post-worship fellowship meal the father of one of the families related events that lead to his leaving the Amish.

He stated that a few years ago he and his family resided on a small farm in another county about fifty miles from where his Amish parents live. As he began studying the Scriptures he came to the conclusion that what he had been taught was not according to the Bible but was based upon good works and tradition. He became aware of feeling trapped in a system of bondage but was unclear as to the remedy. In reading the Scriptures and speaking with others he began to question his Amish religion. His seeking and questions were discovered by some in his Amish group and believing he was being influenced by non-Amish in the area he was instructed to move his family back to his fathers area (where he suspected he could be watched more closely). Being immersed in the traditions, he complied.

Meanwhile, God had prepared for his reception in his home area.

When he moved "back home" he came in contact with an former Amish family. During subsequent conversations and Bible study he came to the conclusion that he must embrace the truth of God's Word and leave his Amish religion. He related how he fled his fathers area and the Amish religion by hurriedly leaving his home by night to escape detection (but that's another story).

What an experience to talk with this brother in Christ. He related also how that many of the Amish don't know the Scriptures and don't understand them as they are read in church in the German language. He related how the Scriptures are misapplied and used out of context by the Amish bishops. How thankful he now is to be released from bondage to freedom in Christ. This man studies the Bible and sincerely desires to walk with Christ and prays for his parents and siblings who remain in the Amish religion. May he be the means God will use in bringing others into the light of the Gospel.

Please remember to pray for not only this family but others who have yet to discover the liberty of the Gospel of Christ as revealed in the Word of God.
